<image:caption>Working with seniors continues to be a important. I’ve had many conversations with NSCC - to see how they might connect with our community. I was so pleased when NSCC launched their CORAH program for seniors (Centre of Rural Aging and Health). I was delighted to be a part of their very first CORAH event! My nephew Aiden Melnick and I volunteered to host a cooking class with local seniors from the Strait area. Our task was to make Acadian fishcakes and salad, and it was so much fun because we all did it together, from peeling to chopping to cooking, and finally, to eating a delicious meal together!</image:caption>

<image:title>2024-2028 Growth Plan (Copy) - Population Growth. (Platform Item #2)</image:title>
<image:caption>People are one of the most important resources in our Town. This is why population growth and retention is so very important. I’ve heard at doors that seniors would like to stay in Port Hawkesbury, but without turn-key senior’s housing options to transition to – they must look elsewhere. I’ve also been contacted by many NSCC students who struggle to find places to rent and must look elsewhere. Differently-abled citizens have few or no options to live independently in fully accessible housing here in Port Hawkesbury – they too must leave. Increasing all manner of housing options is one of the important puzzle pieces for retaining and growing our population. Others are increasing our economic opportunities and job growth; promoting Port Hawkesbury so we can attract and retain newcomers; ensuring our Town has access to health care; and, continuing to improve services, infrastructure, recreation, and beautification that makes our Town attractive and that compliments a high quality of life. Simply put - we need our Town to be a place others can envision as their forever home! This will not be an easy task, but we must work vigorously to grow our population employing multiple strategies!</image:caption>

<image:title>2024-2028 Growth Plan (Copy) - Community Development and Active Healthy Lifestyles (Platform Item #5)</image:title>
<image:caption>Community development is best when a Municipality works collaboratively with community members to grow our Town! Our Town and our community can continue to achieved wonderful projects together, like we’ve done in the past 4 years! We now have a robust community park that rivals any other - and we did that together in a Municipal and Volunteer capacity! Our Town has tremendous capacity for community-based projects because volunteerism is alive and well here! Even during Covid 19, people gladly helped neighbors, friends, and our most vulnerable citizens. Volunteers really are the heart of our community. I know this firsthand because I volunteer right beside you! We see that heart when Seasonal Services deliver food to more than 100 needy families and when hundreds of volunteers ages 6 to 60 donate their time to decorate, cook, serve and entertain hundreds of seniors at the Cape Breton Christmas each year. We see it in the men and women of the Port Hawkesbury Volunteer Fire Department who are ready night and day to protect our lives and property. We see it in our coaches, Rotary Club, Festival of the Strait, Food Bank, Girl Guides, Scouts, CWL, Beautification Committee, and more.</image:caption>

<image:title>2024-2028 Growth Plan (Copy) - Responsible Governance (Platform Item #6)</image:title>
<image:caption>As a business owner, I know how important it is to make sure you are not spending outside your means, and I know how important it is to do “more with less.” For the entire 4-year term, I’ve advocated for our Town Council to “hold the line” and to not increase either commercial or residential taxes. If we want to grow our Town, we need to employ “other” means to increase our revenue stream, while continuing to exercise prudent fiscal management with our Municipal budget. Another way to make sure we are “doing more’ with “less” money - is to look for any and all opportunities to leverage your hard-earned tax dollars. For example, the Destination Reeves Street Project cost a total of $5 Million - however, our Senior Staff and the Destination Reeves Street Committee were able to apply successfully for Federal and Provincial dollars to assist with the cost of this legacy project. In the end, the Town contributed 10% of the total project cost (and no tax increase to pay for it). This demonstrates that we are definitely giving our citizens much more - for less! We must continue to pursue projects this way, through leveraging of funds.</image:caption>

<image:title>2016-2024 Town Progress - Waterfront Development - Waterfront Refresh Days with Town Staff.</image:title>
<image:caption>The talented and resourceful staff of the Town of Port Hawkesbury often participates in Waterfront development “refresh” work, alongside community volunteers. It is always great to see “team building” - and quite literally “town building” happening at our waterfront. Staff had a lot of fun, and I know citizens have appreciated the refreshes over the years at one of waterfront, one of our favorite Town locations!</image:caption>

      <image:title>2016-2024 Town Progress - Waterfront Development - Waterfront Renewal</image:title>
<image:caption>The Town of Port Hawkesbury sought funding from the Province’s Beautification and Streetscaping Program in 2023 and 2024 to revamp and renew our waterfront on Lower Water Street. Also added to the waterfront via project partnerships were visitor kiosks for small watercraft rental and commerce, as well as planter boats and outdoor furniture. Over the next few years plans will continue to renew our waterfront area.</image:caption>

<image:title>2016-2024 Town Progress - Waterfront Development - PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION, “THE WAVE”, TAKES UP RESIDENCE IN SUNSET PARK</image:title>
<image:caption>Port Hawkesbury’s latest public art installation was designed and created by well known Cape Breton artist Gordon Kennedy. With different shapes, forms and colours, Gordon expresses ideas and emotions. His intention is to touch and excite the imagination. Gordon’s latest piece “The Wave” which has been installed in the Sunset Park, captures the beauty that our surrounding natural setting provides each day. Gordon’s idea is the most important part of the creative process, rather than the result. Gordon attended Vancouver Art School, now called the Emily Carr College of Art, in the early 70’s, where he studied painting and metal sculpture. After graduating, he traveled to Europe and then returned to Vancouver and set up a painting studio. In 1977, he moved to Toronto to experience the art scene. From there, he found his way to Cape Breton Island in the early 80’s and has been living and working here ever since. In the 90s, he responded to the ever-present need to change, and he began to experiment again with three-dimensional forms which has led to his most recent works which include sculptures of metal, fibreglass and cement. There have been many shifts in his work over the years, but the basic underlying drive remains the same: that is to touch and to excite the imagination. Gordon has noted that, “When thinking about this project and Port Hawkesbury’s rich history, it provided many interesting options to work with. Ship building, fishing and lumber are a few. They all had a connection with the ocean. The ocean being a major influence, I worked with the rhythms and shapes I associate with it to create this sculpture. The location of the sculpture in the new Sunset Park with the water behind and evening colours made the choice of stainless steel a natural. Its reflective qualities will pick up the subtle changes of colour throughout the day and catch the sunset in the evening. Even at night there will be interesting reflections. Thank you to the Town of Port Hawkesbury and the Waterfront Advisory Committee, Joe Jenaga Engineering for donating the pedestal design, and C.W. Bennett Cement for construction of the pedestal, Target Hydraulics the art piece fabricator, and our funding partners The Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia. Work will continue on Sunset Park in the spring, with the addition of plantings, walkways, sorting areas, picnic shelters and seating.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2016-2024 Town Progress - Waterfront Development - Custom’s House Artisan Incubator</image:title>
<image:caption>Like the Creamery Building, the former “Wellness Centre” had been a chronically vacant building owned by the Town when I became mayor in 2026. This historical building has been completely transformed into “Custom’s House Artisan Incubator.” This has been a phenomenal addition to our waterfront, and the artists have a place to hone their craft and skills, plus it is an opportunity for them to sell and promote their art. Custom’s House is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished with great community partners! Thanks to the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design. Please stop by or visit the website to see many of the artists who’s work is showcased at Custom’s House.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Creamery Building is an important historical landmark in our Town, nevertheless it has been sitting in poor repair for more than a decade and has been chronically vacant. Stakeholder engagement for a “Marine Innovation Centre” led to interest from NSCC to enter into a long-term lease agreement and they have invested $1 million of renovations into this important historical building. If we want to attract and retain people and businesses to Port Hawkesbury, we must continue to work on our Town’s brand as a modern and progressive Town that has a small town feel, but BIG TOWN opportunities and potential.</image:caption>

<image:title>2016-2024 Town Progress - Economic Development - Turning Issues into Opportunities.</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2016, the Town owned several chronically vacant properties, and it was decided by a unanimous motion of council to partner with the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce and our Regional Enterprise Network to offer a “Dragons-Den” style business start-up context that would offer 2 years free rent in one of the chronically vacant municipal properties. It was launched on Canada Day 2017 and 20 business pitches were entered into the contest. The winner was That Dog Place - who’s owner decided to build vs accepted the free rent. By the end of the contest the Town of Port Hawkesbury had successfully rented most of the vacant spaces via private interests that was - in part - spurred on by the Contest and starting a business in Port Hawkesbury!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Customs House located on Granville Street was a chronically vacant building (former “Wellness Centre”). We were successful in transitioning this historic building into a craft incubator. This was an important economic development project that saw 4 new artists move to our Town to practice their craft, and increase commerce at our waterfront. Today, Customs House continues to operate as a incubator and storefront for artists and artisans. This craft incubator includes fully equipped studios, craft business development support, technical mentor-ship, public and visitor engagement, and more.</image:caption>
